Is a self-cleaning litter box worth it? An honest look at the Litter-Robot 4
Plenty of people are asking. On X, one cat owner wrote: "I'm thinking of buying a self-cleaning litter box... Does anyone use one? They are so many to choose from now." Another asked: "Has anyone heard of auto litter boxs harming cats?"
Litter-Robot 4: what Whisker states (checked today)
- Listed "As low as $699" on the manufacturer page on October 21, 2026. Prices change, so check the page.
- 90-day in-home trial. If you return it, "You only have to pay return shipping."
- For cats 3–25 lbs. Kittens under 3 lbs should use "semi-automatic" mode.
- "One Litter-Robot is suitable for up to four cats."
- Sealed waste drawer plus carbon filter. Whisker suggests replacing the filter and OdorTrap packs "every 2-4 weeks."
- Needs clumping clay litter. Plant-based, non-clumping, newspaper and wood pellet litters "do not work."
- Needs 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi for app features. Footprint 22" x 27".
- Whisker says "Over 95% of cats acclimate," a figure it bases on customer return reasons.
What owners on X said
"A self-cleaning litter box doesn't remove the chore, it moves it. You still empty the waste drawer and wipe the sensors." — @SarahmTTP
"A box of litter now lasts me over a month instead of a week." — @FistPunch (about an unnamed self-cleaning box, not necessarily a Litter-Robot)
Our take
It is a big purchase. It can help if you can't scoop daily, but vet guidance on box number and size still applies (see how many boxes). Check that your cat's weight is in range and that your litter is compatible, and keep the 90-day trial window in mind. We have not tested the unit ourselves.
