Litter box cleaning schedule: daily, weekly, and full changes
| When | What | Source |
|---|---|---|
| At least daily | Scoop clumps and feces | OSU, AAHA, Cornell |
| Twice daily (if your litter says so) | Dr. Elsey's directions say "Scoop waste twice daily; add litter as necessary" | Dr. Elsey's |
| Weekly | Wash the box. OSU says "with mild dish detergent," while AAHA says "soap or strong chemicals should be avoided; hot water is best." Either way, skip harsh chemicals. | OSU, AAHA |
| As needed | Replace all litter and replace worn boxes. AAHA says boxes "should be cleaned regularly and replaced." | AAHA |
Litter depth
OSU suggests about 2 inches and Cornell says one to two inches. Dr. Elsey's own directions say 3"–4" for its litter. Start in that range and watch what your cat prefers.
